Contrary to the public opinion the concept of social media is not new. People have always tried to find new ways of communication and collaboration. It is true that in the last years social media has gained a monumental attention largely due to the digital era. The effect of mass use of these social sites is felt in all areas, from personal life, professional environment and also its exerts its influence gradually on the educational process.

This paper is aiming to present a short history of social media from word-of-mouth referrals and stamped letters, electromagnetic waves and the wireless communication to television images and world wide web to today’s newest social platforms like Facebook, Google +, Twitter etc.
